Personality disorders
@ Wednesday, Apr. 18, 2007 – 13.13:33
I don't realy want to get all political and newsy here, there are other bloggers who do it much better (Steph's blog is great for news) but i feel a slight outrage at the news that people with personality disorders may be locked up even though they have commited no crime. I understand that this is to protect the public, but what about the rights of these people? They are members of the public too, and have the same rights as the rest of us.
Is it not the case already, that if a 'mentaly ill person' (I hate to stereotype and put people into brackets) is deemed a danger to either themselves or others then they will be put on a section? If this law was to come intop effect that resulted in locking people away with a personality disorder, then the question i have to ask is, where would they be locked away, and for how long? Life? At what point will they be deemed safe?
Before we opened our arts and craft shop i worked as a mental health support worker for ten years. I did work with people with personality disorders, they were not locked away, they could come and go as they pleased, and for the most part, as long as they stuck to their prescribed medication, and kept up to date with hospital appointments everytinng was fine.
Ok, there were odd incidents, a mised dose of medication, the odd psycotic episode where agresion was used against some of the staff, i adsmit on the odd ocasion i did find myself pinned in the corner of a kitchen, and having to dodge a fire extinguisher tossed down the stairs at me. I recall only four such insidents in ten years, and i have seen more violence used whilst on a night out when people secume to too much alcohol.
So who will have the final say? Who will have the right to say that a person needs to be locked away and take them away from their family and friends, destroy their lives when they have done no wrong?
